The state championship trophies for girls’ golf and boys’ tennis will be handed out this Saturday – including one in Battle Creek.
Bedford Valley Golf Course is the site of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state championship. The State Final tees off Friday, as one local qualifier will make the short trip to the Cereal City in Gull Lake’s Jenna Vandenberg.
Two Battle Creek golfers — Harper Creek’s Sydney Leatherman and Jacquelin Greene — will journey to Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West to compete in the Division 3 State Final. Joining them will be the entire Coldwater team, which qualified via a third-place finish at the regional tournament.
Coldwater will also send a team to the State Finals in boys’ tennis, as the Cardinals qualified for the Division 3 championships at Holland.
The Division 2 state finals at Holly will include Lakeview’s Jai Banerji, who advanced at No. 1 singles by finishing runner-up at the regional, despite entering the tournament unseeded.
All-City volleyball Saturday at Pennfield
Some of the best volleyball in the state can be found right here in Battle Creek – well before the MHSAA State Finals are held at Kellogg Arena, Nov. 19-21.
The All-City Volleyball Tournament is this Saturday at Pennfield High School, and will feature a pair of state-ranked teams in Harper Creek (No. 8 in Class B) and St. Philip (No. 1 in Class D). The host Panthers and Lakeview will also have a say in who is crowned city champion.
The tournament tips off at 9 p.m. Last year, Harper Creek ended St. Philip’s six-year run atop the city tournament as the Beavers went on to make the Class B state semifinals, while the Tigers earned their 10th consecutive Class D state championship.
