High school roundup: Semifinals set for MHAL tennis tournament | USA Today High School Sports

Top-seeded Jessica Schroedl of Franklin D. Roosevelt High School beat fourth-seeded Jackie Katz of Onteora, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tennis tournament on Tuesday at Bard College.

Spackenkill’s Rachel Li topped teammate Sarah McCall, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, to advance. Cynthia Ma of Spackenkill defeated Danielle Bertero (Wallkill), 6-0, 6-3.

Schroedl and Li will square off and Ma will face Onteora’s Stephanie Smith in the seminfinals on Wednesday.

Top-seeded Grace Messenger and Emma Messenger of Marlboro defeated Spackenkill’s Kourtney Kowalski and Leona Lau, 6-2, 6-0, in doubles. Madi Ross and Brittany DeSantis (Marlboro) toppped New Paltz’s Mikal Kalus and Halley Mastro, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Marlboro duos will face each other in the semifinals.


Julia Rusk had 14 digs and two kills to lead Marlboro in a 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 win over host Pine Plains on Tuesday. Ashley Votta added five kills, four digs and two aces.

Amber Mianti had nine digs and three kills, and Emily Beck had six kills for the Iron Dukes (9-4).

Alyssa Boyles had 13 assists and six digs, and Anna Lonczak had nine digs, six assists and three aces for Pine Plains (9-6).

Dover 3, Onteora 0 — Taylor Ball had 17 service points to lead host Dover in a 25-10, 25-16, 25-19 win. Samantha Annunziata added 14 service points, and Brianna Swart had seven service points for the Dragons (5-9).

Dover hosts Saugerties at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Spackenkill 3, Rhinebeck 1 — Courtney Noll had nine kills and one ace to lead the host Spartans in a 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 win.

Sam Wile had five kills and two aces, two blocks and 12 assists. Brenna Nelson had three aces and 17 assists.

Spackenkill (13-3) visits Wallkill at 5:45 p.m. Monday.

Cross country

Red Hook’s Travis Kassner took first, completing the 5k course at Millbrook High School in 19:50.55 in a tri-meet including Red Hook, Millbrook and Highland on Tuesday.

Ethan Husted of Red Hook took second (19:52.2). Millbrook’s Chris Estremera finished third (20:25.73) and Highland’s Jake Tomanocy took fourth (20:37.05).

Sheena Dwyer-McNulty took first for the Red Hook girls team, finishing the course in 22:12. Teammate Mia Michaelides placed second (23:11). Millbrook’s Kaitlin Daly took third (24:53) and Red Hook’s Kira Bruno placed fourth (25:19).

Dual meet at Wallkill High School — New Paltz’s Anthony Fazio took second, running the 5k in 17:51.06 at Wallkill. Marlboro’s Cliff Rood finished fifth (18:43.66), New Paltz’s Chad Catania placed eighth (19:01.78) and Marlboro’s Billy Bernicker took ninth (19:03.69).

New Paltz’s Jessica Cohen placed second in the girls race (20:19). Teammate Jordan Nagel took third (21:38). Marlboro’s Bryanna Mazzella finished fourth (22:05), New Paltz’s Willa Butler was fifth (22:23) and Marlboro’s Jen Herd placed sixth (22:33).

Girls swimming and diving

Brewster 91, John Jay 79 — Caitlin Newhard won the 200 individual medley (2:33.44), though it came in a loss for host John Jay late Tuesday.

DeAnna Newman took first in the 50 freestyle (28.26), Lakshmi Bapatla won the 100 freestyle (1:02), Kristen Seward placed first in the 500 freestyle (6:18.70), and the team of Bapatla, Newhard, Scarduzio and Newman won the 200 freestyle relay (1:56.89) for the Patriots (4-4).
