It’s not over until the clock shows all zeroes… and sometimes not even then, as the Pawling High School field hockey team proved on Tuesday.
Keira Brown scored the winner off a feed from Ashley Cody after time expired, lifting Pawling to a 4-3 comeback victory over host Putnam Valley.
Because a game can’t end with a foul, the play continues after time has elapsed for the team rewarded a penalty corner. And Pawling made it count.
Sarah Campbell, on the insert, dished to Lauren Folchetti atop the circle, and she passed it to Cody on the right, who then fired toward the post. Brown, in perfect position, deflected the ball in.
“It was exciting and the kids were very happy with themselves,” Pawling coach June Lagan said. “We had to fight for this win and they took the bull by the horns.”
Pawling trailed 3-1 with 13:53 remaining, but Lexi Fleming scored and Cody tied it with 6:38 remaining. Carly McGrath had a goal, and Folchetti and Campbell each had an assist. Kayla Chavarri made two saves and Anna Lisa Credendino had one stop for Pawling (12-1).
After Cody tied it, Lagan said, “It was like, ‘OK, we’ve got momentum here. Do we have time to get another one?’”
Plenty of time, actually.
