Estero girls golf qualifies for regionals | USA Today High School Sports

One day after the Estero High boys golf team advanced to the region tournament, the girls team followed suit Tuesday.

Led by freshman Kim Egozi, the Wildcats carded a 415 to earn a third-place finish in the District 2A-21 golf tournament at North Naples’ lush Quail Creek Country Club.

Egozi shot an 84. She put together a solid, if unspectacular, round with 10 pars and a 41 on the front nine.

Kelli Kragh was second on the Wildcat team with an 89.

“Kim and Kelli are both warriors,” said Estero coach Norm Heyboer.

“They have unlimited potential, and since they’re both freshman, they should have three more great years.”The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team now advance to the region tournament, to be held next week in Port Charlotte.

Barron Collier won the meet at 331. Naples was second with 369.

Megan Pagan Acosta and Ashley Cardona, both of Palmetto Ridge, also qualified along with Lely’s Elishka Hruskova.

“It was a good day for our girls,” Heyboer said. “This was a tough course. What was so hard about it was that it played both fast and slow. On one hole, the green was really fast, and then slow on the next. So it was really a challenge for everyone today.”

Despite finishing fourth individually overall, Egozi wasn’t completely pleased with everything.

“I don’t think this was my best round of the year,” Egozi said. “My driver wasn’t as good as usual, and my approach shots had some problems. But my putting was actually pretty good, better than it’s been lately.”

Egozi closed strong on the final few holes but didn’t need to in order to preserve the Wildcats’ region berth. Estero finished 43 shots ahead of Palmetto Ridge.

“I chipped and putted pretty well. My short game was good,” Egozi said. “The course was in good condition, and there were a lot of narrow fairways and tricky layup holes. It was fair, though, and it you hit it where you planned on, you could do well.”
