As Cape Coral girls golf coach Mike Gorton drives by each of his players during a match he never specifically asks them about their scores to keep the pressure off them.
However, when he asks general questions about how they’re playing, he looks for either a thumbs up or a smile.
There were a lot of those Monday as the Seahawks were the only team to stay under the 400-mark at the District 2A-20 girls tournament at Fort Myers Country Club. Senior Brooke Ciccone fired a 5-over 76 while sophomore Mia Nelson carded a 93 to lead Cape to its second straight district title.
During a season where the team was tasked with replacing reigning News-Press Girls Golfer of the year Kayla Poff, Gorton searched for improvement each week.
“They’ve been working really hard at practice,” Gorton said. “When we first started there were a couple of things each one needed to work on. The talent level is different from last year. I’ve just been working with them to help make them better. It just really clicked this week.”
Ciccone finished second and has been invaluable to some of the younger players.
“Brooke been around this golf team for four years and she’s been a big anchor for this team,” Gorton said. “She works at her game constantly. She’s always trying to improve. She’s there all the time to help out the younger girls. She very courteous and kind to them. Any questions they have, she’ll help out.”
Cape (380) is headed to the Region 2A-7 tournament next week at Port Charlotte Golf Club along with second-place Ida Baker (380), which was led by individual district champion Brittany Shin, and North Fort Myers (470).
Coming off a victory at the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament last week, Shin carded the lowest round (64) ever by a female at the 98-year old course. She notched eight birdies and just one bogey.
“It’s settling,” Shin said of winning a district title. “I just played it like any other tournament. I just gave it my best.”
Nelson finished third and teammate Brittney Schall took fourth.
Island Coast’s Katie Bruno (105), LaBelle’s Charlie Lynn (106) and Cypress Lake’s A’layahnna Checo (109) qualified for regionals as individuals.
