BELLEVUE — On Saturday, Maple Valley’s cross country team competed in the Bellevue Bronco Invitational, and placed second in both the boys’ and girls’ races.
For the boys, who scored 52 points as a team, Logan Valiquette placed fifth overall in a time of 19-minutes, 48-seconds. Behind Valiquette was Jacob Brighton (9th, 20:07), Drew Allen (10th, 20:38), Wyatt Baird (12th, 20:52), and Nathan Baird (16th, 22:02). All seven Lions earned medals in the boys’ race.
In the girls’ race, the top five runners all earned medals as the team ran to a second place finish with 42 total points. The Lions top five were Cassie Linn (4th, 24:58), Carlee Allen (8th, 25:24), Katie Cheeseman (9th, 25:34), Payton Schrader (10th, 25:56), and Hannah McGlocklin (11th, 26:13).
KALAMAZOO CHRISTIAN 3, (at) DELTON-KELLOGG 1: The Panthers lost in a four set match at home, 22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 19-25. Morgan Champion led Delton-Kellogg with 18 kills and 10 digs, while Abby Wooten had six kills and six digs; Lilly Howard had eight kills and six blocks; Bailee Tigchelaar had 23 digs; Sam Mohn had 18 assists and six digs; and Hannah Walker had 11 assists and five aces.
MT. MORRIS INVITE (SAT.): Lakeview lost in the finals to host Mt. Morris, 17-25, 17-25. On their way to the championship, the Spartans (22-17) defeated Almont, Charlevoix, and Valley Lutheran in pool play, and then Almont (25-16, 25-12) and Croswell-Lexington (20-25, 26-24, 15-10). Sidney Schiller led Lakeview in kills with 38, while Rose Tecumseh had 28. Schiller also had 23 digs and five blocks; Emma Morey had 86 assists; and Samantha Vosburg and Aiden Baum each had 20 digs.
STURGIS INVITE (SAT.): Pennfield finished as the runner up, losing to Edwardsburg in the finals, 20-25, 18-25. Earlier in bracket play, the Panthers beat Thornapple-Kellogg (18-25, 25-22, 15-6) and Blissfield (25-14, 25-18). Leading Pennfield was Alexa Stephenson with 28 kills; Teone Lewis with 21 kills and eight blocks; Montana Rench with 42 digs; and Kailey Jackson with 14 digs and 21 assists.
COLDWATER INVITE (SAT.): Host Coldwater went unbeaten in pool play, downing Galesburg-Augusta and Athens on their way to being seeded third in bracket play. In the quarterfinals, the Cardinals defeated Athens (28-26, 25-19) before falling to Dearborn Divine Child (20-25, 17-25, 10-15) in the semifinals. Leading Coldwater statistically was Jasmine Wellet with 38 digs, 30 kills, 13 blocks, and 11 aces, while Drue Mullin had 47 digs and 17 kills; Jamie Wellet had 56 assists, 40 digs, 27 kills, and six blocks. Also for the Cardinals, Tyler Scheid had seven aces and eight blocks, and Carly Howell had 24 assists.
