Matthew Kennedy and Reynolds still have some life in the race for the Mountain Athletic Conference soccer championship.
Kennedy is a sophomore who provided the winning goal in the 56th minute of Monday night’s 3-2 victory at Asheville High.
Daniel Vickers and River Naisang also scored for the Rockets (15-3-1, 6-2-0), who overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit.
Both goals for the Cougars (11-3-2, 5-2-0) came off of penalty kicks taken by Emory (Ga.) recruit Will Jones. Evan Delucca made three saves for Asheville while Reynolds keeper Parker Johnson had five.
The Cougars are 11th in the most recent N.C. Soccer Coaches Association rankings for NCHSAA 3-A, while Reynolds is 12th.
Both teams are chasing Roberson (13-2-1, 6-0-1) for the outright MAC championship. The conference officially recognizes a 3-A and 4-A champion in every team sport and the regular season ends on Oct. 28. Asheville and Reynolds are both 3-A, while Roberson is 4-A.
