Coldwater and Marion Local seem linked when it comes to streaks in football.
Coldwater (Ohio) beat Marion Local (Maria Stein, Ohio) in 2012. That was the last time Marion had lost — 43 games in a row — until Coldwater pulled off an epic victory Friday night.
Kyle McKibben hit a 43-yard field goal with 1.4 seconds remaining to give Coldwater a 17-14 victory. The win pushed Coldwater’s streak to 15 consecutive wins. The last loss? You guessed it, to Marion last fall in the regular season.
The 43-game winning streak was the fourth-longest active stretch in the nation behind Edgewood Academy (Ala.), Maine-Endwell (Endicott, N.Y.) and Allen (Texas). Each of those streaks is at least 50.
The game was fitting for teams ranked No. 1 in the state in their respective classes. Coldwater is No. 1 in Division V and Marion Local in Division VI.
Perhaps the most noteworthy stats for those who attend high school football games regularly. The winner of the 50/50 drawing received a school record $11,437.
