Special thanks to an Asheville High reader for this recap and photo from Saturday’s NCRunners Elite Invitational cross country meet:

In the NC Runners Elite Invitational Championship event, the Cougars made a strong team showing taking the 3rd place award.  The second team took 10th place in the unofficial JV State Championships held in conjunction with the event.  Both events were held at At Beeson Park in Kernersville, which will host the North Carolina State Championships in 4 weeks.

Asheville’s strong showing in the Championship race was lead by Davis Turner (16:34.68), who finished 25th and set a personal record.  He was followed by Noah Shore (16:43.05), Haven Honeycutt (16:43.95, personal record), Adam Young (16:59.40), and Collin Kemper (17:23.83).  Asheville finished with 200 points trailing only Weddington (73, points) and Cardinal Gibbons (169 points).  The field included 9 of the overall top 10 teams from across the state and all top 4 teams in 3-A this year.

In one of the rare events where the second team can earn points, the Cougars scored 6 personal records (out of 11 runners), which was good enough for a top 10 in this ultracompetitive Unofficial JV Championship  featuring 43 teams.  Henry Lathrop, Gave Lavasseur, Cole Doster, Thoreau Kilbourne, Mac Fisher, and Reuben Solnick are recorded their best times ever on the course.  Fifteen Asheville runners finished under 20:05 (faster than a pace of 6 minutes and 30 seconds per mile).
