They played for a good cause. They won. And they won in front of a larger-than-normal crowd.
The John Jay High School volleyball team beat visiting Our Lady of Lourdes 25-11, 25-10, 25-20 on Friday in the Patriots’ “pink out” game.
John Jay Coach Maria Mahoney said her girls were happy to win on the special occasion, which drew about 200 spectators. Overall the Patriots raised over $2,000 for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.
“We had a very good crowd because it was our pink out — probably 200 in the gym,” Mahoney said. “I think we passed really well, we had our offense hitting what we’ve been practicing. Passing was key and we served pretty well, too.”
Alyssa Ashley helped lead the Patriots with 12 assists. Maddie Barberan had eight kills, nine digs and one ace. Sam Fitzgerald contributed with eight assists and one ace while Robin Sarica added eight digs.
Lourdes was led by Grace Rappleyea, who had three kills and four blocks. Ceara Giametta added seven assists and 10 digs.
“Lourdes is a very scrappy team,” Mahoney said. “They kept coming back. 3-0 doesn’t say how well both teams played.”
The Warriors visit Pawling at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
John Jay (10-4) visits Roy C. Ketcham at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Patriots will first scrimmage against Section 9’s Millbrook Saturday, in what Mahoney feels will be good preparation for the stretch run.
“Hopefully we’ll hone our skills,” Mahoney said of the scrimmage with the Blazers.
