Football: Roosevelt ekes out a win over New Paltz | USA Today High School Sports

A couple of healthy players can make a world of difference.

With the return of quarterback Justin Guerrero and defensive tackle Neil Tompkins, the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School football team beat host New Paltz 18-17 on Friday for its first victory of the season.

With four minutes left and trailing 17-12, Guerrero hit Payton Sorci in the end zone for a 56-yard touchdown. A holding call on the Huguenots on their ensuing possession and a pass breakup by Devante Pavelock cut short New Paltz’s chance at a late rally.

Guerrero passed for 350 yards and two touchdowns.

“I’d say he’s a difference-maker,” Roosevelt coach Brian Bellino said of his quarterback. “Neil was the anchor in the middle of our defense. Our pass blocking was unbelievable.”

Anthony Nittolo rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries for New Paltz. Aidan O’Neill made a field goal while Kenny Verney had nine tackles. Michael Kenney had an interception.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said New Paltz coach Tom Tegeler, whose Huguenots fell to 2-4. New Paltz will visit Poughkeepsie Friday at 6 p.m.

Roosevelt (1-5) hosts Minisink Valley Friday at 7 p.m.
