Football: John Jay win was worth the wait | USA Today High School Sports

John Jay High School’s football team had a long time to wait Friday. The end result was worth the wait.

The visitors from Wiccopee beat Mamaroneck 29-15. The Patriots got stuck in traffic and arrived at their Westchester County destination 2 ½ hours later than they wanted to and then had to sit through an hour-long thunder delay before finally getting things rolling.

“I was pleased, especially with all that went on sitting in the locker room and sitting in the gym,” said John Jay coach Tom O’Hare, whose Patriots improved to 5-1. “I think the kids did a great job of staying focused.”

Ryan Schumacher had two touchdown passes for the Patriots – one on a 71-yard strike to Jai’von Reynolds in the first quarter and another for 4 yards to Logan O’Donnell in the third quarter. Schumacher scored on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter. Bristol Smith completed John Jay’s scoring in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard run following a pitch.

John Jay awaits Sunday’s seeding announcement for the Section 1 Class AA qualifying round, which is Oct. 16-17. The 16-team round will determine the eight squads who will comprise the Section 1 Class AA tournament.
