It’s not often you see a high school kicker march out on the field to attempt a game-winning field goal.
But last Friday against Williamston, Bailey Edwards made the most of his unique opportunity. The Fowlerville High School senior nailed a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Gladiators a 31-28 victory over their CAAC White rival.
The long-distance boot, which Edwards said is one of the longest he’s ever made, was voted the LSJ prep video of the week.
“Coach trusts me a lot, and I appreciate that,” said Edwards, who pulls double-duty in the fall by also playing on the soccer team. “We have a really good connection and he knew I could make it.
“That was my first time in a situation like that. It was the perfect situation for me because I knew we wouldn’t lose if I miss it, we would just go into overtime. So there wasn’t much pressure. But I was super excited to make it and contribute to the team.”

The victory over the Hornets was Fowlerville’s first since 2007.
The kick also kept the Gladiators’ (3-3) playoff hopes alive. Fowlerville has three games remaining on its schedule against teams that have a combined record of 9-9. And, after the win, Edwards said the team is confident it can close the regular season strong and make its first postseason appearance since 2010.
““Everyone is very excited to have this good of a record through this part of the season,” he said. “We feel we can win out the rest of the way.”
