We’re into the home stretch now. Two-thirds of the high school football regular season are officially over. Only three weeks remain and then it’s on to the postseason. Here’s a look at some standout performers from across the state with another edition of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA South Dakota Players of the Week:
Canistota’s Jerad Nielsen racked up 272 yards and seven rushing touchdowns on 18 carries, and added a 61-yard kickoff return for a score to power the Hawks past Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 56-30.
Dakota Valley’s Austin Carter was 11 for 16 passing for 244 yards and a touchdown, and added a 147 rushing yards and a score to lead the Panthers past Elk Point-Jefferson. Tyler Johnson hauled in seven catches for 197 yards and a score.
Burke/South Central’s Tyson Serr needed just 11 carries to total 277 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-6 defeat of Avon.
Payton Conrad finished with 300 total yards — 228 through the air on 11 for 16 passing, with eight carries for 72 on the ground — and three touchdowns to lead Tea Area past Vermillion 29-14.
Grant Johnson tallied 360 total yards and four touchdowns to lead Alcester-Hudson past Baltic 32-12. Johnson rushed 23 times for 214 yards and three scores, and went 7-for-12 passing for 146 yards and a score.
Miller’s Colin Weidenbach rushed 26 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-18 win over Kimball/White Lake.
O’Gorman’s Dodi Makwinja rushed 16 times for 135 yards and touchdown in a 35-0 road win against Yankton.
Jerry Kappenman rushed an astounding 51 times for 244 yards and a touchdown as Fighting Cougars fell to Bridgewater-Emery-Ethan 14-7.
Six of Gabe King’s 11 completions for Irene-Wakonda went for touchdowns as the Eagles pounded Centerville 60-8. King finished 11 for 16 passing for 176 yards.
Parker’s Landon Leberman was an efficient 8-for-13 passing for 129 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Pheasants past Garretson 38-0.
Josh Brown rushed 20 times for 254 yards and two scores while Christian Schneiders added 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead Dell Rapids St. Mary 60-12 over Elkton-Lake Benton.
Sioux Valley’s Brock Swartos rushed 24 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns as the Cossacks downed Flandreau 28-7.
Mobridge-Pollock’s Matt Lepke rushed for 192 yards and three scores in a 55-8 win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.
Huron’s Hyland Heinz was 17 of 24 for 250 yards passing and two touchdowns as the Tigers edged Spearfish 20-14. Heinz also had a rushing score.
Hunter Gaikowski had 17 carries for 137 yards and three scores for Webster Area in a 50-0 win over Florence-Henry.
Bon Homme’s Chase Kortan rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries as the Cavaliers topped Colman-Egan 42-20.
Zach Anderson rushed for 116 yard and four touchdowns as Gayville-Volin defeated Tripp-Delmont/Armour 35-6.
Chester Area’s Levi DeVries had four catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns, as quarterback Jesse Kreutzfeldt threw for 193 yards and added a rushing score in the Flyers’ 48-8 win over Viborg-Hurley.
Hanson’s Wyatt Kayser rushed 29 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-14 win over Menno/Marion.
Scotland’s Chase Mogck rushed 13 times for 215 yards and four touchdowns in the Highlanders’ 52-12 win over Marty Indian.
Mitchell’s Spencer Neugebauer rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns as the Kernels edged Lincoln 42-35. For the Patriots, Cole DeBerg was 16 of 27 passing for 366 yards and two scores. Lee Ransom caught seven passes for 188 yards and a score.
