St. Clair wins fun-filled relay meet | USA Today High School Sports

It’s hard to find more fun in sports than the St. Clair Relays.

St. Clair, Marysville, Marine City and Eisenhower all met at the Saints pool to partake in relays that were both fun and competitive.

For example, the night ended with the T-shirt relay – not  an event you see at every meet. Four girls swim per team, like a normal relay, but the swimmer has to take off a shirt and pass it to the next swimmer to put on before they start their leg of the race.

The Saints team of Olivia Barnes, Alexis Smith, Jane Wentrack and Grace Shinske owned that relay with a 2:20.89 time – 30 seconds faster than the second place Vikings.

That race was fitting for how the rest of the night went as the Saints won with 146 points, followed by Eisenhower (106), Marysville (86) and Marine City (74).

Another fun race was the 200 freestyle kick board relay, which St. Clair’s MacKenzie Kapanka, Lola Laenen, Alyssa Bacon and Shinske won in 2:39.19.

The third unusual relay was the 200 freestyle under/over race, where each girls had to be completely underwater for the first 25 yards for their first leg. St. Clair’s Jenna Meyers, Lola Laenen, Emilee Laenen and Red Smith finished first in 1:57.34.

The event also held rookie events, held for first year swimmers.

The Saints crew of Sammy Dodson, Amber Therrien, Maddie Lever and Gil Wonner won the rookie 200 medley relay in 2:07.24.

Eisenhower’s Mary Rembisz, Natalia Pfeffer, Bethany Baker and Rebecca Ribbing won the rookie 200 freestyle relay in 2:00.64.

The diving portion also had a team feel to it with two divers each diving for their team three times. The two teammates’ scores were combined into one, and Marysville’s Keri Ryan and Emily Miller took first with 163.15.

St. Clair’s 400 medley relay team of Shinske, Molly Likins, Heidi Likins and Smith got the meet started with a dominant win in 4:21.45.

The Saints 200 butterfly relay of Avery Skonieczny, Leaver and the Likins sisters earned first in 2:01.37, topping Eisenhower by 12 seconds.

The Saints 200 backstroke squad of Shinske, Holly Wingate, Kate Beauchamp and Magan Lembrecht took first with 2:07.25.

St. Clair also won the 200 breaststroke relay in 2:40.98 with Allison Harwood, Lola Laenen, Lydia Gee and Molly Likins swimming to the win. Marysville was close behind at 2:42.39 with the team of Taylor Winzer, Sarah Gauthier, Brynn Bishop and Riley Pawson.

The 400 medley (100×4 IM) relay was taken by St. Clair’s Heidi Likins, Molly Likins, Magan Lambrecht and Emilee Laenen in 4:38.09 – 33 seconds ahead of second place Marysville.

Eisenhower won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:19.81 with Chelsea Hampton, Leah Schulz, Jacquelinne Barreto-Tufino and Susana Hernandez.
