Mathews wins WNC/Mission Health award | USA Today High School Sports

North Buncombe’s Blake Mathews.

Blake Mathews is a quick study.

The North Buncombe junior is averaging 29.4 yards per catch in his first varsity football season and has scored eight receiving touchdowns so far for the Black Hawks (3-4, 2-0).

He is the latest winner of the Mission Health Spotlight Performance of the Week award. Video of the presentation to Mathews can be found at this link.

Mathews had 111 receiving yards and two touchdown catches as well as a pair of pick-six interception returns in Monday’s 32-21 win at McDowell.

Honorable mention for this week’s award goes to Franklin’s Kelton Lowry, Murphy’s Joey Curry, Mitchell’s Peyton Greene and Reynolds’ Rico Dowdle who were also nominated by Citizen-Times readers.
