PESHAWAR: A division bench of Peshawar High Court sought an explanation from the government for the appointment of the board of governors (BoG) chairman at Lady Reading Hospital.

Justices Yahya Afridi and Waqar Ahmad Seth accepted on Wednesday a writ petition filed by Pakistan Medical Association Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter President Dr Hussain Ahmad Haroon. Haroon named K-P chief secretary, health secretary and PMDC as the respondents.

His lawyer Mian Mohibullah Kakakhel informed the court LRH BoG Chairman Dr Nosherwan Barki moved to the United States in 1966 and had not retuned since.

“He is a US citizen with no Pakistani nationality or even a local SIM card issued to his name,” Kakakhel informed the court.

He said Barki, 78, was still living in the US when he was appointed chairman. Kakakhel added this was a blatant violation of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council or PMDC rules and regulations.

Kakakhel told the bench Barki was running affairs of the hospital through a video link. He claimed the doctor was appointed on a political basis as he was Imran Khan’s cousin.

The counsel urged the court to declare his appointment null and void. The court accepted the petition for hearing and issued notices to the respondents to submit a response.
