ROUNDUP: Indians nab impressive volleyball win over LQ | USA Today High School Sports

In a roller-coaster volleyball game, the defending CIF champs showed their winner’s mettle, outlasting ninth-ranked La Quinta for a dramatic victory.

Palm Springs started fast, watched La Quinta rally and then pulled out a hard-fought 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 16-14 victory.

Hannah Wright led the Indians with nine kills and four aces. Asia O’Neil added eight kills, 13 digs, three aces and three blocks, and Ashtyn Lyneis had 34 assists and 13 digs. The Indians play at Indio on Thursday.

La Quinta was led by Jolie Samuelson with 20 kills and Kyrsti Photias with 32 assists. Cameron Sommaripa had six kills.


Xavier Prep 3, Cathedral City 0: The Saints cruised past the Lions for a 25-5, 25-8, 25-9 victory.

Taylor Orr had seven digs for the Saints. Jenna Braun had five kills, Jillian Barbato had four kills and Alix Dreier and Chloe Harling added three kills each. Kayleen Krause had seven aces, and Gaby Werner had 10 assists.

Palm Desert 3, Indio 0: The Aztecs stayed on course with a 25-11, 25-7, 25-6 win over Indio.

Palm Desert (13-5, 4-0) was led by Tara Sauerbrey with 11 kills, Serena Stockton with 10 digs and three aces, and Morgan Dewyer who had 16 assists, six aces, seven kills and seven digs. Sonora Walton had 13 assists.

Desert Mirage 3, Twentynine Palms 0: Marisol Ruiz had six kills, 15 digs and four aces to lift the Rams to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 win.

Cyclali Jimenez has seven kills and two blocks, while Joanna Garcia added six kills and two aces.

Desert Mirage (13-5-1, 4-1) hosts Big Bear on Thursday.

Shadow Hills 3, Rancho Mirage 0: The Knights snared a De Anza League win over the Rattlers without dropping a game 25-13, 25-17, 25-14.

Judy Figueroa had 16 assists, Anissa Hernandez had eight assists and Trinity Castaneda had 14 kills. The Knights (5-0 De Anza) host Desert Hot Springs on Thursday.

Desert Christian Academy 3, Mesa Grande Academy 0: Abby Wagner, Bella Smith and Grace Johnson all had five kills and Olivia Hoddick added four kills. Cami Frahmann had 22 digs and Meraiah Martinez chimed in with 12 digs.

DCA is now 9-3 overall and 6-0 in league play.

West Shores 3, Borrego Springs 0: The Wildcats’ strong season continued with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 league win. Karina Muneton had 13 kills, Dixie Sutherland had 12 assists and Allison Soler and Ccorryn Doll each had 10 service points apiece.

West Shores (11-1-1, 1-0) is the No. 15 team in Division 3 of the San Diego Section.

Boys’ water polo

La Quinta 27, Cathedral City 3: The Blackhawks sunk the Lions as 14 different players scored in a DVL win.

Alex Ostland led the way with four goals. Frankie Sanchez, Justin Rudisill and Cameron Reynolds each scored three. Tanner Mitchell, Billy Catton, Jeremy Baker and Steve Perez each scored twice, while Brayden Smith, Todd Becker, Sam King, Miles Tarsitano, Spencer Lowell and Justin Hop each scored once.

La Quinta (11-3, 3-0) plays at Indio on Thursday.

Palm Desert 13, Xavier Prep 11: The Aztecs pulled out a narrow home win over a feisty Saints team.

Girls’ golf

La Quinta 269, Coachella Valley 311: Mariah Moon shone brightly with a 40 and Jorden Flynn added a 47 for the victorious Blackhawks.

The Arabs were led by Natalia Gonzalez with a 59 and Jazmin Huante with a 61.

La Quinta (6-2) will host Elsinore on Wednesday at the Indian Wells Golf Resort. Coachella Valley (9-6) hosts Indio on Wednesday and Brawley and Blythe on Thursday at Palm Valley Country Club.

Palm Desert 218, Cathedral City 338: The Aztecs topped the Lions at Desert Willow on the par-36 Fire Cliff course.

The Aztecs (11-0, 8-0) were led by match medalist Madison Walker with a 39. Lily Rodriguez and Madison Rincon each added a 43, Jennifer Hanson had a 46 and Dana Condon had a 47.

The Lions were led by Haley Bartsch with a 58. Priscella Martinez had a 68 and she was followed by Alexis Clark (70), Lida Nguyen (70) and Lexie Guanajuato (72).

Palm Desert hosts Indio on Thursday at Desert Willow.

Rancho Mirage 313, Desert Hot Springs 330: The Rattlers netted a De Anza victory behind match medalist Ashley Gates with a 57 and Danielle Dumas with a 60.

Girls’ tennis

Rancho Mirage 11, Shadow Hills 7: The Rattlers improved their De Anza League record to 5-1 with a win over the Knights. All three singles players for Rancho Mirage, Tatiana Harvey, Alegra Erickson, and Karla Munoz, swept their matches. Additional wins were secured by the the doubles teams of Ava Descalzo-Reyna Sac and Izzy Meza-Janelle Vidal. The Rattlers host La Quinta in a non-league match Friday.

Palm Desert 11, Palm Springs 7: The Aztecs were led by Claudia Stepien 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 in a DVL win over the Indians.

The Aztecs also received two singles wins each from Kylee Shannon and Alexia Rodriguez (6-0, 6-0). The doubles team of Halle VanNetta and Carolina Al Gonsin swept to 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 wins and Sheyla Ramos and Saige Collins chipped in with a doubles win 6-1.

The Indians were led by Shekinah Daffon who won two singles sets 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, Rosemary Agresor and Ericka Aldana won 6-4, 6-1; Hannah Johnson and Kailee Kennedy 6-1, 6-2 and Alexandra Mazmanian and Darah Shay won a set 6-1.

Palm Springs moves to 8-6, 5-3 in DVL and play against Xavier Prep on Tuesday and La Quinta on Thursday next week.

Indio 10, Cathedral City 8: The Rajahs won four singles sets and six doubles sets to eke out a win over the Lions.

Audree Ochoa (6-3, 6-4) and Martha Lamas (6-3, 6-3) nabbed singles wins. In doubles, Alissa Rocha and Leiah Elisarraras (6-1, 6-1), Jackie De La Rosa and Emily Hernandez (6-4, 6-1) and Arianna Aguilar and Taly Bautista (6-1, 6-1) all earned wins.

Indio (3-9, 3-5) hosts La Quinta on Thursday.

Xavier Prep 13, Coachella Valley 5: The Saints grabbed their eighth straight win, topping the Arabs at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

In singles, Tiani Jadulang (6-0), Julia Way (6-0, 6-0) and Gillan Berg (6-4, 6-1, 6-1) grabbed victories. The Saints received doubles wins from Yajaira Castillo and Fernanda Gonzales (6-0), Fernanda Gonzales and Sierra Hilton (6-0, 6-3), Megan McNulty and Maddie Groat (6-1, 6-0), McNulty and Sonja Hiller (6-0) and Lilly Sun and Marni McDowell (6-0).

Xavier Prep plays fellow DVL unbeaten Palm Desert on Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
