Hendersonville senior Michael Schmidt became the first Western North Carolina football player to reach 2,000 yards in an offensive category (passing) in Friday’s 56-27 rout at Madison.
Schmidt (2,011 yards) was credited with 411 yards and four touchdowns which were snagged by Leon Cooks (39 and 42 yards), Tykel Landrum (76) and Quintin Wright (2). As a junior, Schmidt finished with a Western North Carolina-best 3,004 yards.
The Bearcats (3-4, 2-0) jumped out to a 42-7 lead at halftime Monday in Marshall. Gary ran the ball 11 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns (2, 42 and 54 yards).
Derek Gonzalez rushed for 139 yards a touchdown for the Patriots (0-7, 0-2). Mason Edwards passed for 120 yards with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Dawson Coates (39) with 55 seconds to go in the first quarter.
