Former Smoky Mountain football coach Lionel Brooks and his wife are recovering from a serious car wreck over the weekend.
The couple were traveling up Cowee Mountain in the Jackson-Macon County area on Saturday when another car hydro-planed and hit them head-on.
Lionel, 74, and Linda, 66, are the parents of Franklin football coach Josh Brooks and Panthers athletic director Jay Brooks.
Josh Brooks said that his father suffered a fractured pelvis and major lacerations on his left arm and leg. His mother’s injuries include a broken heel. Lionel and Linda Brooks are both currently receiving treatment at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
“They’re in bad shape, but they’re alive,” Josh Brooks said.
“From what we saw at the crash site, this could have easily been worse. What worries me, especially with dad is that he’s 74 and is going to need 12 to 14 weeks (of rehabilitation) to walk again. But we’re thankful that God was looking over them.”
Lionel Brooks compiled a 31-39 record as Smoky Mountain’s coach from 1990 and 1996. Prior to that, he was a defensive coordinator under former coach Boyce Deitz.
Lionel, Jay and Josh Brooks were inducted into the Jackson County athletic hall of fame as a family in 2010.
