Prep roundup: HC volleyball hosts, wins tournament | USA Today High School Sports

For the second year in a row, the Harper Creek Beavers hoisted the trophy at the Dara Kwiatkowski Memorial Tournament, held at Harper Creek High School.

In pool play, the Beavers went undefeated, beating Athens, Mendon, and Three Rivers, which qualified them for the gold bracket in the single elimination tournament.

Athens went 0-4 in the tournament, but had strong performances from Josie Lamson with 47 assists and 27 digs, and Rachel Nobach with 19 kills and 34 digs.

In the quarterfinals, the Beavers beat Mendon (25-22, 25-11), and then defeated Marshall in the semifinals (25-9, 25-20).

Harper Creek took on St. Philip in the finals, topping the Fighting Tigers 25-22, 25-18.

Charley Andrews led the Beavers in kills with 49, while Jess Cadena had the most digs with 48.

Also contributing for Harper Creek (34-4-1) was Olivia Leson with 38 digs and 10 aces, Katie Wade with 130 assists and 11 aces, Faith Hayes with 25 digs, and Jacey Bowers with 23 digs.


BARRY COUNTY TOURNAMENT: Calhoun County took second, losing to Rivertown Valley in the championship match. Leading the Cougars was Kirby Frodge with 60 kills, 13 blocks, 52 digs, and 11 aces, Lindsey Barry with 66 digs, 17 aces, and 36 kills, Abby Parks with 89 assists and 14 aces, Kara Twiest with 17 aces and 52 digs, and Hannah Huling with 26 kills.

CONCORD INVITE: Union City split with every team they played in pool play (Adrian Madison, Pewamo Westphalia, Concord), and then lost in the first round of bracket play to Hillsdale, 17-25, 25-20, 14-16. Individually, Rachel Wing led the Chargers with 20 kills and five blocks, Haley McIntosh had 20 kills and 11 digs, Haley Harty had 13 digs and 13 kills, Cassie Thorpe had 44 assists, and Emma Hoppe had 25 digs.


(AT) MARSHALL 4, OTSEGO 1: Jeremy Luciani scored twice for the Redhawks, and Brandon Face and Matt Terry also found the back of the net in the win. Assisting on goals were Cody Clapper, Terry, Luciani, and Ashton DeLong. The Redhawks move to 11-2-5 on the season and can clinch a share of the I-8 title on Tuesday win a win over Harper Creek.


READING 16, QUINCY 14 (FRI.): Oriole quarterback Nathan Karney threw for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The first touchdown pass went to Josh Clark from 30 yards out, and the second was caught by Ryan Gibson for a five-yard score. On defense, John Spragg led Quincy with 12 tackles and Braden Rubin intercepted a pass.


DON BAESE CARSON CITY CRYSTAL INVITE: St. Philip brought home the third place trophy out of 13 teams, while Maple Valley was 14th. The Lady Tigers’ Ava Strenge was first overall in 18:41, followed by Riley Rutherford (5th, 19:59), Madi Elliot (10th, 20:41), Meagan Casterline (35th, 22:48), and Helen Berner (73rd), 25:48). Maple Valley’s top five were Katie Cheeseman (81st, 24:27), Kailey Bolton (83rd, 24:33), Cassie Linn (86th, 24:53), Carlee Allen (87th, 24:58), and Payton Schrader (93rd, 25:53).

OTSEGO INVITE: In the gold division, Bronson’s top three runners were Megan Vaghn (63rd, 24:40), Brianna Uriostegui (67th, 24:58), and Julie Jiminez (92nd, 29:19).


DON BAESE CARSON CITY CRYSTAL INVITE: St. Philip placed 13th out of 16 teams on Saturday, and Maple Valley was 16th. The Fighting Tigers were led by Jack Greenman, who was 11th in 17:58, followed by Kenny Wojcik (37th, 18:53), Noah Barry (70th, 20:23), Jack Wojcik (111th, 24:20), and Jon Perry (112th, 24:21). The Lions’ top five were Jacob Brighton (60th, 19:13), Logan Valiquette (71st, 19:44), Drew Allen (79th, 20:08), Wyatt Baird (91st, 21:13), and Nathan Baird (104th, 22:27).

OSTEGO INVITE: Marshall was 13th out of 18 teams at the invitational. The Redhawks’ top five were Christian Kalisz (54th, 17:30), Chris Bell (61st, 17:42), Jontaj Wallace (69th, 17:51), Calvin Smith (70th, 17:52), Elijah Solis (88th, 18:14).

In the gold division, Bronson’s top five runners were Colin Ransbottom (14th, 17:38), Marcus Broom (25th, 18:06), Hunter Trine (33rd, 18:36), Isaac Robertson (49th, 19:06), and Bryce Kosmerick (57th, 19:18).
