Nyack had a pretty good run over the last week and a half. Actually, it was a great run.
The Indians won all seven of their matches over the course of a nine-day span and performed well at Clarkstown South’s Vikings Brown and Gold tournament in the middle of all of it, splitting with Panas, 23-25, 26-24, in pool play.
And there was senior libero Megan Sneeden, anchoring the defense the entire way — one diving dig at a time.
Sneeden was instrumental in Nyack’s success this week, registering 137 digs in four matches — good for an average of just over 34 per match. While known for her highlight-reel defense, Sneeden also had six aces and eight assists during the week.
The veteran’s on-court presence helped keep Nyack (10-0) as one of the three remaining undefeated teams in Section 1 and has now earned her player of the week honors.
Nyack is in the midst of a tremendous follow-up year to a breakout season last year in which it won 13 matches — more than the previous four years combined. There’s no telling how far the Indians’ streak will go or how far they’ll make it in the playoffs, but Sneeden’s defense will surely be leading the way.
Journal News/Lohud.com volleyball beat reporter Mike Zacchio will pick a player of the week to be announced every Sunday. Fans, coaches, players, etc. can nominate players via Twitter (@Zacchio_LoHud), email ([email protected]), or text (if you have my number).
Please include the players’ name, school, grade, position and stats for the week (all matches from Monday through Sunday, if they played that morning). Tournament performances (all-tournament team, tournament MVP, team win, etc.) count towards this award, even if you don’t have exact stats.
Example: Brooke Davis, Tree Hill H.S., Sr., OH: Brooke had 43 kills, 34 assists, 38 digs and 10 blocks in the Ravens’ three wins this week. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Rosewood Invitational on Saturday.
There is no limit to how many times a player can win during the season. I will do my best to pick the best candidate. Sometimes that will be a repeat winner. I’ll try to spread the love as much as I can, but as the saying goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.”
Announcements will usually be posted in the afternoons or evenings. Please try to submit all nominations by Saturday night (or sooner, if the team does not have a tournament/match over the weekend).
