Whitney M. Young High Gifted and Talented Leadership Academy in Cleveland began its football program in 2013 with 14 varsity players. The school enrollment was 127, and the school could not attain membership in the state association because a school needs to have two varsity sports per season.
As the program began, Whitney M. Young took its expected lumps on the field. It lost every game it played in 2013. And every game in 2014. And its first four games in 2015 with only 18 players.
That was 23 games overall.
The long wait has ended. Whitney M. Young beat Collinwood 12-0 on Friday for the first win in program history.
“It feels great,” Whitney Young coach Vincent Hunt told Cleveland.com. “Now we are over the threshold of winning a game, now it’s time to build the program to make it a strong one.”
The Young scores were both in the first quarter — a 38-yard run by Davon Dumetz and a 30-yard pass from DaRohn Pryor to Seth Trammell.
Collinwood fell to 0-6.
