If Friday night’s Xavier Prep at Cathedral City game had been televised, viewers would have worn out the foam bricks tossed at the tube.
Penalty-laden and mistake-prone throughout, the evening saw the guests depart with a messy 10-0 win over the host Lions.
“It was ugly. I told the team, plain and simple, that was an ugly win,” said Saints’ head coach Bob Molyet. “But when it comes down to it, it’s still a ‘W’ in the column.”
The victory for Xavier put the Saints in first place in early league play.
“We’re 2-0 in conference right now, we face a heck of a team in Palm Springs next week, and that will take everything we have and then some,” added Molyet. “But we’ll come out there with a positive attitude and fight hard.”
For those interested in reviewing some of the slop: The teams combined for 23 penalties (14 for Cathedral City), while the Saints marched to victory despite turning the ball over five times.
“Basically what has killed us all year long is the turnovers,” said Molyet. “We’ve got to quit turning the ball over and quite making the little mistakes that get us those five and 10-yard penalties. If we do that, we’ll gives ourselves a much better chance.”
Four of the Xavier giveaways came via interceptions, with senior quarterback Darrell Lewis making just his second career start behind center.
“Darrell hasn’t had a lot of reps at quarterback, so it’s a learning curve for him,” Molyet detailed. “Sometimes, he shouldn’t have been throwing the balls he threw tonight, and I guarantee we’ll look at film tomorrow and there’s a couple of times where there’s guys wide open.”
Friday’s result marked the eighth consecutive defeat for the Lions dating to last season. In defeat, the Lions received 58 rushing yards from Jordan Wallace and 49 more from quarterback Cameron Lee. Lee, playing both ways, also grabbed two picks on the night.
Star of the Game
Isaac Ortega: Underused on the night, Ortega slammed for 50 yards on just six carries and scored the game’s lone touchdown. With the Saints leading 3-0 early in the second half, the senior back crashed 10 yards for a TD to craft what would ultimately prove the game’s final margin.
Xavier Prep (2-0 DVL, 3-3) returns home to face tough Palm Springs in a DVL battle next Friday night, while Cathedral City (0-2 DVL, 0-6) hunts for its first win with a trip to La Quinta on Friday at 7 p.m.
