Home-course advantage paid off for the Reed cross country teams Friday.
Reed junior Anthony Ocegueda held off Henry Weisberg to win the boys race in the Reed Invitational and Reed junior Samantha King-Shaw was first in the girls race, ahead of second-place Sina Arnold of McQueen.
Ocegueda has won two races this season, both at Reed. He appreciates knowing the route.
“I run here every single day,” he said. “I’m familiar with the course, all the pebbles on the ground, all the cracks. I could run it with my eyes closed.”
He said he was tired before the race. But that went away.
He finished the 5-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 37 seconds. Weisberg ran it in 16:38 and Gregory Gephart, a senior at McQueen, was third in 17:01
“I felt good in the middle of the race and I decided it was time to take off,” Ocegueda said.
It was almost a sprint to the finish line.
Ocegueda tried to build a little lead with about 700 meters left, so he would have a cushion for the final push.
“It’s a big confidence booster,” Ocegueda said. “I know I have it left. I was thinking for a while, maybe this season wasn’t going to be as good as I thought it was going to be. It’s good motivation and I think I can get back into it.”
King-Shaw said the rain this week helped firm up the hill section of the course around Shadow Mountain.
“We run that hill probably every week,” she said.
She took the lead after being third about midway through. She posted a time of 20:19. Arnold ran it in 20:22 and Erin Moyer of Damonte Ranch was third in 20:27.
McQueen won the boys team title with 48 points, Spanish Springs was second with 76 and Galena was third with 94.
Truckee won the girls team title with 70 points, Reno was second with 78 and McQueen third with 84. Reno junior Kyra Hunsberger did not run as she is recovering from being sick last week
There were 18 schools competing in the meet, so it served as a precursor to the Northern Region championships, Oct. 31 at Rancho San Rafael.
