In a season that has seen Lakeview’s tennis, soccer and girls’ golf All-City winning streaks come to an end, the Spartans’ swimming team couldn’t take anything for granted on Saturday, despite the fact that they came in as the 12-time defending All-City champions.
The Spartans’ placed first in only two events, but still managed to gather enough points to overcome upset attempts by Battle Creek Central and Harper Creek.
“We can’t take anything for granted this year,” Lakeview coach Kyle Lott said. “The other teams are swimming great, and we swam well today. Our focus is the conference meet, but we do have to keep working really hard to try to keep improving because we have a target on our backs.
“We need to continue doing what we’re doing, but we’re waiting to see that pinnacle where we start to see a few time drops. But that’s common in swimming, you’re not supposed to swim fast right now. If you swim fast right now, you’re in trouble at the end.”
Lakeview finished with a team score of 480, followed by Battle Creek Central with 406, and Harper Creek with 359.
The top individual performance on Saturday came from Harper Creek’s Jena Wager, who completed the 100 breaststroke in a state qualifying time of 1:13.94.
In the first event of the day, the 200 freestyle medley relay team of Abby Carstens, Lillian Shenefield, Michelle Joslyn, and Danielle Root placed first for Lakeview in a time of 2:01.05. Carstens recorded the only other Spartans’ victory of the day in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.95.
“Walking into the meet, we were a little bit nervous,” said Lakeview’s Hattie Kinnisten. “We beat Battle Creek Central in a dual meet, but they’re definitely better this year than they have been in a long time, so it’s a lot more competition…because we knew Central was definitely hungry for a win today.
“Hearing that we are the only ones that have been able to carry out the All-City titles, it’s a little bit humbling knowing that we do need to keep up the hard work.”
Battle Creek Central powered its way to eight first-place finishes in the meet. The Bearcats won the 200 freestyle (Morgan Mowry), the 200 individual medley (Max Perrin), the 50 freestyle (Allysen Smith), the 100 butterfly (Perrin), the 100 freestyle (Mowry), the 500 freestyle (Faith Guzzo), the 200 freestyle relay (Smith, Mowry, Guzzo, Perrin), and the 400 freestyle relay (Guzzo, Smith, Mowry, Perrin).
“It’s nice that Battle Creek [Central] and Harper [Creek] are both improving because we’re a big community, and we pretty much train together in the summer, so it’s pushing us to race harder,” Lakeview’s Abby Carstens said. “We have a lot of fun [with the other teams] behind the blocks, but we know that once the timer goes off, we’ve gotta race, and it’s team against team no matter how close we are.”
