LaBelle used a strong running game and stingy defense to put away Gateway Charter, 55-14 Friday night.

Tray Williams and Hugo Vargas led the Cowboys as Williams ran for three touchdowns, and Vargas accounted for two more — one rushing and one passing.

“We ran the ball really well tonight.” Cowboys head coach Chris Siner said. “We’ll ride him (Williams) as long as we can.”

Overall, LaBelle scored five rushing touchdowns.

The Cowboys’ other two scores were key plays that disheartened the Griffins. Just before the end of the first half with LaBelle up 19-7, Gateway’s quarterback fumbled. Weston Randant picked up the ball and ran 62 yards giving the Cowboys a 25-7 halftime lead.

As the third quarter started, the Griffins marched down and scored to pull within 25-14. But the ensuing kickoff was run back 95 yards by Marcellous Mitchell.

After that, Gateway only made it into Cowboys territory one more time, and that drive was snuffed out by one of two LaBelle interceptions.
