Big plays on special teams lifted Port Huron Northern to a 21-18 Macomb Area Conference Gold Division win Friday night against St. Clair at Memorial Stadium.
It’s the fourth straight win for Northern, which improved to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the MAC Gold. St. Clair falls to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Gold.
The Saints took a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter, as Riley Gleason scored a pair of touchdowns. The first came on a 6-yard pass from Colin Agosta late in the first quarter, and the second on a 1-yard run early in the second. The first extra point was wide, and the Saints went for 2 and failed following the second touchdown.
Northern stormed back, switching to the no-huddle before scoring on a 1-yard run by Billy Fealko. After a shanked St. Clair punt, Northern got the ball at the St. Clair 23, and capitalized two plays later, as Fealko hit Luc Bowman for a 23-yard score. Fealko hit both extra points to make it 14-12.
St. Clair had a chance to take the lead before the half, getting down to the Northern 9-yard line, but the Northern defense held, getting its team into halftime with the two-point lead.
The Saints did open the second half with a score, however, going 59 yards in nine plays, all on the ground. Gleason, who had 57 of those 59 yards, finished it off with a 3-yard score. Again the conversion failed, and St. Clair led 18-14.
Northern took the lead back early in the fourth on a 2-yard run by Fealko to make it 21-18. It was set up when Malik Norris blocked a punt and the Huskies recovered it at the 2.
St. Clair had a final chance in the game, getting the ball with 52.3 seconds remaining at its own 8 yard line. After a couple big gains, Michael Burrell picked off a St. Clair pass to seal the game for his team.
