Football roundup: Mitchell tightens up in second half, tops Lincoln | USA Today High School Sports

After giving up 381 yards of total offense in the first half, Mitchell buckled down and limited Lincoln to just 61 over the final two quarters en route to a 42-35 triumph over the Patriots in Mitchell. The Kernels were led by Kanin Nelson who had 20 carries for 108 yards and three scores. Spencer Neugebauer accumulated 209 total yards, including 164 on the ground and added a couple of rushing touchdowns to help the cause. Lincoln quarterback Cole DeBurg completed 16 of 27 passes for 366 yards, with a couple of touchdowns and an interception. His favorite target, Lee Ransom, caught seven passes for 188 yards and a score. The Patriots (3-3) welcome Rapid City Central next week, while the Kernels (4-2) host Brooking.

Chester 48, Viborg-Hurley 8 at Viborg-Hurley – Chester’s Jesse Kreutzfeldt threw for 193 yards and rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Levi DeVries had 4 receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns. For Viborg-Hurley, Dylan Sawyer was active on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Sawyer, rushed for 70 yards and had 14 tackles. The scoring started off with a Jesse Kreutzfeldt 37-yard touchdown pass to Levi DeVries in the first quarter. A few minutes later, it was Kreutzfeldt to DeVries again for a 30-yard touchdown. Kreutzfeldt capped another drive with a rushing touchdown from 5 yards out. Chester started the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run by Kaleb Eich. Chester followed that up with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Kreutzfeldt to Josh Anderson. Just before halftime, Cole Anderson finished a Chester drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Next: Chester (6-0) plays at Irene-Wakonda on Oct. 16. Viborg-Hurley (1-5) plays Baltic next week.

Tri-Valley 41, Beresford 0 in Colton – Brenton Hanisch ran for 107 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown and Noah Jewett ran for 35 yards with two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs. Dylan Eldeen, Tye Klinner and Logan Larsen had a touchdown apiece for TV. For Beresford, Chris Kropuenske ran seven times for 45 yards. Joseph Lane was 3-for-5 with 41 yards passing. Kaleb Peterson, Thatcher Schlup and Connor Hoy all had eight tackles. For TV, Jacob Kasowski had five tackles. Next: Beresford (3-3) visits Sioux Valley; Tri-Valley has a bye week.

Sioux Valley 28, Flandreau 7 at Sioux Valley – Brock Swartos ran for three touchdowns and had 151 yards rushing on 24 carries to lead Sioux Valley. Matt Larson had 62 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Daymein Lucas threw for 153 yards and had a touchdown pass to Cole Gross. For Flandreau, Brendon Ten Eyck ran for 82 yards on 18 carries and Dawson Blum ran for 61 yards on 14 carries. Next: Sioux Valley (3-2) hosts Beresford; Flandreau (0-6) has a bye week.

Bridgewater 14, McCook Central Montrose 7 in Bridgewater – Jesse Grosdidier connected with Camden Myers for a 50-yard touchdown pass and Cole Gassman added a 44-yard run to lift Bridgewater to a win over McCook Central Montrose. MCM’s lone score came from Jerry Kappenman who scored from 10 yards out. He had 51 carries for 244 yards. Bridgewater (3-3) hosts Elk-Point, while McCook (2-4) has a bye.

Tea Area 29, Vermillion 14 in Tea – Payton Conrad was 11-of-16 in the air for 228 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Titans. He also added 72 yards rushing on eight attempts with a score. Adam Hein and Evan Munkvold had touchdown receptions – Munkvold caught four passes for 90 yards. For Vermillion, Noah Walker ran for 87 yards and Logan Peterson ran for 47 yards with a touchdown. Next: Vermillion (1-5) visits Sioux Falls Christian; Tea Area (5-1) visits West Central.

Irene-Wakonda 60, Centerville 8 in Centerville – Gabe King was 11-of-16 in the air for 176 yards and six touchdowns to lead Centerville. Justin Kaskie ran for 85 yards on 10 carries. He added a rushing touchdown and a 45-yard touchdown reception. Justin Kaskie had five tackles. For Centerville, Trace Sikkink was 6-of-13 passing for 100 yards and a touchdown. Tyrell Martz ran for 104 yards and added a touchdown. Sikkink had four tackles. Next: IW (2-3) visits Garretson; Centerville (0-6) has a bye.

Parker 38, Garretson 0 in Garretson – Landon Leberman completed eight of 13 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns to lead Parker past Garretson. Leberman’s touchdown passes went to Zach Anderson for 12 yards, Zamuiel Centeno for 45 and Pierce Plucker for 29. He also added a 14-yard run for the visitors. Kordell Buyck logged 14 carries for 106 yards and a score. Garretson (2-4) got eight tackles from Marc Rattenborg and will host Irene-Wakonda next week. Parker (5-1) has a bye.

Alcester-Hudson 32, Baltic 12 in Alcester – Grant Johnson ran for 214 yards on 23 attempts and added three touchdowns to lead Alcester-Hudson. He was also 7 of 12 in the air for 146 yards and a score. For Baltic, Jon Wilhelmsen was 8-of-19 in the air for 147 passing yards and a touchdown pass to Austin Row. Wilhemlsen also had a rushing touchdown. Austin Row ran for 56 yards on nine attempts. Next: Baltic (3-2) visits Viborg-Hurley, AH (5-1) visits Canistota.

Canistota 56, Mount Vernon-Plankinton 30 in Canistota – Jerad Nielsen had seven rushing touchdowns and tallied 272 total yards on 18 carries to lead Canistota. Shay Jolley threw for 134 yards on 4-for-9 completions. Nielsen scored three times in the first quarter and three times in the second. For MVP, Hayden Schmidt was 11-of-17 in the air for 215 yards and two scores. Jesse Hastings ran for 78 yards and had a touchdown. Schmidt also had a rushing score. Tate Deinert had 203 yards receiving on 10 completions with two touchdowns. Next: Canistota (5-0) hosts Alcester-Hudson and MVP (3-2) hosts Hanson.

Dell Rapids St. Mary 60, Elkton Lake Benton 22 in Elkton – Dell Rapids St. Mary kept Elkton Lake Benton winless with a 60-22 drubbing. Josh Brown led the way with 20 carries for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Schnieders added another 135 yards on the ground with three touchdowns. Elkton (0-5) was led quarterback Blaine Hefti who was 13 of 32 for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Trevor Sik caught four passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Dell Rapids St. Mary (4-2) plays Deubrook at home next week, while Elkton Lake Benton (0-5) visits De Smet.

Dakota Valley 38, Elk Point-Jefferson 12 in Elk Point – Austin Carter scored a rushing touchdown and added a 22-yard pass to Tyler Johnson to lead Dakota Valley. Carter ran for 147 yards on 23 attempts and had 244 yards passing on 11 of 16 completions. Johnson caught seven passes for 197 yards. For EPJ, Logan Donelan ran for 49 yards and threw for 71 yards on 3 of 8 completions. He threw a 67-yard touchdown pass. Next: Dakota Valley (1-5) hosts Lennox; EPJ (0-5) visits Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan.

Hanson 38, Menno 14 in Alexandria – Wyatt Kayser had three rushing touchdowns and 144 yards on 29 carries to lead Hanson. Matt Kayser ran 16 times for 91 yards. For Menno/Marion, Jackson Diede had eight completions on 16 attempts and 165 passing yards. He had a touchdown run of 56 yards. Next: Hanson (2-3) visits Mount Vernon/Plankinton; Menno (0-4) plays Howard.

Wolsey-Wessington 53, Sunshine Bible Academy 0 at SBA – SBA was limited to just 21 yards of total offense in a shutout loss to Wolsey-Wessington. W-W (6-0, 2-0) had rushing touchdowns from Hunter Johnson (2), Austin Kemnitz, Jerret Weber (2) and Darian Ogunjemelusi. Hunter Johnson and Austin Kemnitz both threw for a TD, as well. Sunshine Bible Academy (1-5, 0-3) hosts Lower Brule. Wolsey-Wessington hosts Bon Homme.

Scotland 52, Marty 12 at Marty – 359 of Scotland’s 405 total yards came on the ground in a dominating win over Marty. Chase Mogck picked up 215 yards on just 13 carries.. Defensively, Jimmy Baker had six tackles and a sack, and Damien Fuerst had six tackles and an interception (one of four Scotland takeaways). Marty finished with 122 total yards, including 96 passing yards from Mason Dion on six completions.

Mobridge-Pollock 55, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 8 at Mobridge-Pollock – Matt Lepke had 192 rushing yards and three touchdowns for MP.

Huron 20, Spearfish 14 in Huron – Hyland Heinz was 17-for-24 in the air for 250 yards passing with two touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Heinz also added a 1-yard touchdown run.

Groton Area 21, Sisseton 0 in Sisseton – Adam Herman ran for two touchdowns and had 100 yards rushing on four attempts to lead Groton Area.

Waverly-South Shore 69, Dakota Hills 0 at Dakota Hills – Carson Britzman ran for 60 yards and had two touchdowns for WSS. Vincent Ramos added two rushing touchdowns.

Webster Area 50, Florence-Henry 0 in Waubay – Hunter Gaikowski ran for 137 yards on 17 attempts and had three rushing touchdowns to lead Webster Area. Noah Thurston ran for 72 yards.

Leola-Frederick 48, Ipswich-Edmunds 22 at Leola-Frederick – Austin Sumption had two rushing touchdowns and had 93 rushing yards to lead LF. John VanDover ran for 123 yards on 22 attempts with a score and Zach Sumption had 62 rushing yards on seven attempts with two touchdowns. Bryce Malsam ran for two touchdowns for Ipswich-Edmunds.
