The Muskrats are officially in the football playoffs.
A year removed from a 1-8 season, the Muskrats erased a 21-7 first half deficit and got four touchdowns from quarterback AJ Garshott in a 33-21 win at Croswell-Lexington to put them at 6-0. Those six victories guarantees them a spot in the playoffs.
Garshott punched in three quarterback sneak touchdowns and threw for one on a game-sealing 35 yard strike to Brandon Spencer.
The Muskrat defense was also a force in the second half, forcing the Pioneers into four three-and-outs and one fumble in the second half.
Cros-Lex’s Joe Duff was the leading rusher with 120 ground yards. Algonac’s Shane Asselin was the leading Muskrat rusher with 115 yards.
Algonac got on the board first, capitalizing on a fumble on Cros-Lex’s first offensive play of the game. Five plays after the Pioneers coughed it up, Algonac senior Garshott scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak to take a quick 7-0 lead.
Cros-Lex responded with a 58 yard game-tying rushing touchdown by senior Matt Kettlewell, beginning what would be 21 unanswered points by the Pioneers offense.
Joe Duff picked up 58 of his 110 first half rushing yards on a long touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Even more trouble hit Algonac on the first play on the following drive as they fumbled on the 22 yard line.
One play later, Duff ran it in for his second touchdown in just minutes to make it a 21-7 game.
Algonac got its offense in shape for the next drive, ending with a big eight-yard touchdown run by Spencer on 4th-and-2 to make it 21-13 after a blocked extra point.
A big defensive stand came to end the half as Cros-Lex was short on a fourth down run just nine yards away from the end zone, keeping the game at 21-13 to end the first half.
With seconds to spare in the third quarter, Garshott ran in his second one-yard run of the game. However, the two point conversion pass was no good to keep it 21-19, Pioneer heading into the final quarter.
After a big 35-yard catch by Joe McKee on 3rd-and-long at midfield, Garshott ran it into the end zone from one yard out, followed with a two point catch by Spencer to take a 27-21 lead with 7:44 left in the game.
