STUARTS DRAFT – Midway through the regular season, Stuart Draft has already matched its win total from a year ago.
Thursday night, the Cougars scored three times in the second quarter en route to a 47-0 win over Stonewall Jackson. Izzy Johnson finished with 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The win moved Draft, which entered the game sitting second in the 2A East power ratings, to 4-1 this season. Last year, the Cougars won just three games all season.
The win sets up a big game at Buffalo Gap next Friday. The Bison were ranked first in the 2A East ratings before falling to Riverheads Thursday night.
“We just treat every game the same,” said Draft coach Nathan Floyd looking ahead to the Bison. “We approach every day the same. There’s not one game that’s more important than the other.”
Draft scored twice on its first four plays against the Generals. Dylann Lehmann raced to the end zone for a 76-yard touchdown run on Draft’s first offensive play and it took the Cougars just three plays the next time it touched the ball to score on Marston Jones’ 31-yard run.
After allowing Stonewall four first downs and 49 yards on the game’s opening drive, the Stuarts Draft defense held the Generals to just two first downs the rest of the first half. Stonewall punted five times, turned it over on downs and watched the clock run out on seven first-half possessions. The Generals got just 23 yards on its final six drives of the half.
“We had a shutout, but I guess as a coach we’re still not satisfied,” said Floyd. “We missed a lot of tackles, we were reaching and grabbing.”
Johnson added an 86-yard scoring run and Lehmann put Draft up 27-0 at halftime with a 16-yard TD run with 58.7 seconds left in the second quarter.
Jones, Johnson and Tucker Rost all added touchdown runs in the second half for the Cougars.
Lehmann added 92 yards in the first half and Jones finished with 69 yards.
“It’s great having running backs that can run,” said Floyd. “But it makes it even better when you’ve got some line up front to block, open up the holes. It makes the running backs job a lot easier.”
