GALLATIN One way to get over a shutout loss is to score early in the next match.
That’s what the Beech High girls soccer team did on Thursday evening, and the Lady Buccaneers went on to defeat host Gallatin 3-1 in a District 9-AAA match.
Sophomore Natalie Lankster converted in the third minute to give Beech (11-4 overall, 5-1 in District 9-AAA) an early lead that the Lady Buccaneers held through the first half, and added onto it in the second half.
“After the Hendersonville game (an 8-0 loss on Tuesday), we just needed to get our minds right,” Beech head coach Tim Guinn said. “We were a little flat tonight and made it hard on ourselves. But we got that early goal and went from there.”
Gallatin junior Veda Hooge had a chance to tie the game with 17 minutes left, but she was unable to convert on a cross from freshman Jillian Baldis.
“We created some chances up top,” Gallatin head coach Greg Harper said. “We had a chance to tie on a 1-on-1 with the keeper and got a little unlucky. Veda did the right thing and cut it back with a left-foot shot. She just mishit it a bit.”
Cailyn Meador was in the right place to receive a pass from senior Olivia Schmidt, and beat Gallatin sophomore goalkeeper Abi Green with 15:54 to play for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Sierra Robinson converted a cross from senior Kendon Curtis less than five minutes later.
But Lankster said she believes that the Lady Bucs’ attack can be better.
“I feel like we could beat them down the sides, but when it came to finishing, it wasn’t all the way there,” Lankster said. “Our coaches wanted us at the near post or the far post (to receive crossing attempts) and we didn’t do that well.”
Senior Megan Waller put the Lady Wave (8-6-1, 2-4) on the board with 11:06 remaining, as her shot from 25 yards sailed over Beech senior goalkeeper Allie Guinn’s arms and into the net.
“Overall, I’m very pleased of the effort and the understanding of what we’re trying to do,” Harper said. “That was a little progress tonight.”
Green made 12 saves in the match, while Guinn finished with four.
Beech will close the regular season by hosting Summit on Monday and Portland on Tuesday. Gallatin will finish the regular season by hosting Hendersonville next Thursday.
