GALLATIN The Station Camp and Portland girls’ soccer teams faced off against one another in district play on Thursday night. The Lady Bison were able to maintain control throughout the contest, cruising to a 5-0 win.
“I thought we played really well, shared the ball and possessed it well,” Station Camp head coach Thomas Morand said. “We came out and executed really well and it was just an overall good night for us.”
Three of Station Camp’s goals came in the first half. Sophomore Ariana Orellana scored early in the game, followed by goals from senior Katelyn Baggett and sophomore Carolyn Fitch later in the half. Junior Megan Brinkley and senior Ashlyn Parker added two more goals in the second half.
Despite the loss, Portland head coach Ryan Goostree was pleased with the performance of his team’s defense.
“We played really good defense tonight, even though the score doesn’t show it,” Goostree said. “We know Station Camp was a good team. They pass the ball and possess the ball well, so we really came out with a defensive mindset like we should.
“Overall I’m proud of how they played. Coming into tonight we’ve had a rough last few games. We just had a big loss to Gallatin in penalty kicks the other night, so it was good to see them compete against a good team.”
Despite giving up five goals, both coaches were equally impressed with Portland junior goalkeeper Vicky Roe, who finished with 31 saves and continued to challenge the Lady Bison offense throughout the game.
“Their keeper had a really good game,” Morand said. We saw her in warm-ups and told them to follow shots because the ball was wet. We finished when we had the opportunities even though she played really well. We did the best we could to break them down.”
With the win, Station Camp improves to 10-3-2 overall and 4-1 district play, while Portland drops to 7-8-1 overall and 1-4 in district plaly.
Station Camp travels to Wilson Central on Monday in a makeup game that was previously rained out, then hosts Hendersonville on Tuesday night, while Portland travels to Beech on Tuesday.
