Alexa Franceschi scored the winner off a pass from Isabelle LaBarbera in the 70th minute as Red Hook High School edged host New Paltz, 2-1, in girls soccer on Thursday.
LaBarbera drew a foul, resulting in a free kick. She then lined the ball toward the far post and Franceschi headed it into the right corner from about 3 yards out.
Megan Jankowiak made six saves as the Raiders improved to 10-0.
“It’s the first time we’d been tested in a few weeks,” Raiders coach Jason Pavlich said. “I was very happy with the way we responded.”
LaBarbera scored in the 31st minute off a feed from Franceschi, but “New Paltz is such a skilled and fast team,” Pavlich said, “we knew it was just a matter of time before they slipped a goal by us.”
Which is precisely what happened when Bridget Barry tied it 12 minutes later. Jamie Meluso had 11 saves for the Huguenots. “But we were able to bounce back and press them and get the go-ahead goal,” Pavlich said.
Red Hook graduated 11 seniors and has maintained its stride while integrating several younger players, Pavlich said. “We rolled through the early part of our schedule, but it’s getting more difficult,” Pavlich said. “But the team is starting to find its rhythm now.”
