Cocoa High star Chauncey Gardner, who has committed to play for the University of Florida, did that on Wednesday. With all eyes on him as he stood behind the podium in his new ceremonial jersey Gardner asked Cocoa junior Tiffany Harris to stand up.

Then he asked her to homecoming. When the poster was revealed, mom Delatron Johnson’s heart skipped a beat as she wondered what her son might be asking. Gardner had called his mother just 20 minutes before the ceremony to ask her to buy some chocolate but wouldn’t say why.

First things first. The Tigers play Saturday in Lakewood, Ohio, against St. Edward, the No. 24 team in the USA Today Super 25. Homecoming isn’t until Oct. 30, and the dance is on Halloween night.
