Each week the Enquirer Prep Gameday page breaks down the top city and area games of the week in high school football and highlights the top performances:
BC Central (2-3) at Gull Lake (2-3), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Despite an overall record under .500, Battle Creek Central is still in first place in the SMAC East – so every division game is huge for the Bearcats. BCC goes to division-foe Gull Lake next. The Blue Devils are 2-3 and played BCC tough last year, losing 21-20. Gull Lake is coming off a 63-16 loss to state-ranked Portage Central.
Great Gridder: Carlos Parks had a key touchdown in 27-21 loss to St. Joseph
Harper Creek (3-2) at Parma Western (3-2), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Parma Western is coming off a 35-0 shutout over Charlotte. Parma Western features a top defense, led by Magnus Radala, who has set national powerlifting records for his age group. Harper Creek has now strung two wins together to get over .500 and is looking for some momentum with a tough second half of the season in front of the Beavers, which still includes teams above them in the standings in Coldwater and Marshall.
Great Gridder: Brennen Habelitz had 139 yards rushing and seven tackles in win over Pennfield
Lakeview (3-2) vs. Kalamazoo Central (1-4), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Kalamazoo Central still hasn’t found its stride since losing its starting QB in the preseason to injury. BCC scored 41 points in a half against the Giants two weeks ago in a game that was stopped due to weather. And K-Central lost to a then-winless Niles team last week. Lakeview is coming off a big 27-22 win over Stevensville-Lakeshore to get over the .500 mark.
Great Gridder: Cameron Hanlon had two field goals for Spartans in win.
Pennfield (1-4) vs. Jackson Northwest (0-5), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Northwest is giving up nearly 40 points a game as it remains winless on the season. The Mounties went 1-8 last year as well, losing to Pennfield, 21-8. After losing four in a row, Pennfield needs a win to gain some confidence before seeing rivals Lumen Christi and Olivet in the second half of the season.
Great Gridder: Parris Bolden had a touchdown pass and led Pennfield in rushing in loss to Harper Creek
St. Philip (5-0) vs Webberville (4-1), 7 p.m. Saturday
Scouting Report: Webberville had been undefeated before losing to Waldron last week, 46-14. However, Webberville’s wins have come against four teams that are a combined 2-18 on the year. The Webberville game begins a string of four challenging games to end the year for St. Philip as it looks to become playoff eligible this week.
Great Gridder: Trevor Searls had 10 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery in win last week.
