Wenyen Gabriel may be one of the newest 5-star recruits in the Class of 2016, but that didn’t mean he needed much time to formulate a decision about where he wanted to play college basketball.
Gabriel, a combo forward for Wilbraham Monson Academy in Massachusetts committed to Kentucky on Thursday, taking the plunge as part of ESPN’s Recruiting Nation program. He is Kentucky’s second five-star recruit in the Class of 2016, pledging to join future teammate Sacha Killeya-Jones in Lexington.
Shortly after the announcement was made, Gabriel posted a photo of himself holding up a Kentucky t-shirt on Twitter, celebrating his decision.
The 6-foot-9, 195-pounder has been one the fastest rising members of the Class of 2015, turning heads of some evaluators who hardly had him on their radar two years earlier. Gabriel held scholarship offers from more than 20 schools, most of them national powers such as Duke, UConn, Kansas, North Carolina and Texas, among others. He was said to be seriously considering offers from Maryland and Providence in addition to Kentucky as he neared a decision.
None of those programs could compete with Kentucky Coach John Calipari, who landed another lengthy, uber-talented young big man who he can help mold in the Bluegrass State.
