Clarkstown North, Carmel to put perfect records to test | USA Today High School Sports

Each week, football writer Josh Thomson will give his opinion on the area’s best high school football teams. Last week, undefeated Clarkstown North and Carmel began their ascent in the Top 10, with Carmel joining the list for the first time all season. Well, the Rams west and Rams east continued their rise as they get set for perhaps their toughest opponents yet.

Clarkstown North (4-0) will visit fellow unbeaten New Rochelle (4-0) Friday night in a meeting of two of Class AA’s best. The Rams have been stout defensively all season, but they will face the ever-improving Huguenots, fresh off routs of North Rockland and Arlington.

Carmel (4-0) is scheduled to visit Scarsdale (2-2) on Saturday afternoon. Despite a .500 record, the Raiders, with their deceptive triple-option offense, may have the skill to keep pace with Carmel’s talented offense.

Find out where those teams and others rank in the latest Top 10, followed by the area’s best teams in each class:

Week 5 lohud football rankings

Top 10 overall

1. Stepinac (3-0) – The score was closer than it probably should’ve been (Holy Cross scored in the final seconds), but Stepinac’s 20-13 win last week was a little too close regardless. The Crusaders will look to play a cleaner game on the road at Monsignor Farrell Saturday night.

2. New Rochelle (4-0) – The Huguenots were in survival mode the first two weeks, but they’ve since found their form. Last week’s 33-6 win on the road at Arlington was one of Section 1’s most impressive so far this season.

3. John Jay-East Fishkiil (3-1) – The Patriots don’t have the balance they had a year ago, but quarterback Ryan Schumacher is so good it may not matter.

4. Clarkstown North (4-0) – The Rams have allowed just 21 points all season and have run the ball better than just about anyone. If they are for real, Friday’s game at New Rochelle will prove it.

5. Rye (4-0) – Although Rye stumbled a bit last week against winless Panas, it has clearly been the class of Class A so far. Friday night’s game against Lourdes is another chance to put even more evidence behind that claim.

6. Carmel (4-0) – Carmel has moved the ball well on everyone and will face a Scarsdale team susceptible to the big play this week. Still, Scarsdale has faced a challenging schedule, so this could be the Rams’ toughest game yet.

7. Iona Prep (0-3) – The Gaels remain hobbled by injuries. They are much better than their record, but their brutal schedule continues this week when they travel to CHSFL power St. Anthony’s.

8. Arlington (2-2) – As much as Arlington may have been humbled by last week’s home loss to New Rochelle, the result said more about the Huguenots, who have proven they are Class AA’s front-runner.

9. Scarsdale (2-2) – Scarsdale moved the ball fine against John Jay-East Fishkill last week, but its young defense failed to deliver big stops at key points in the game. The Raiders must improve that area to compete with the best.

10. Mahopac (2-2) – The Indians turned to junior Andrew Ryan at quarterback last week and their offense scored 38 points. Still, senior Dan Foley (back injury) believes he will play at some point this season.

On the bubble: Lourdes (3-1), Eastchester (4-0), Somers (2-2), Yorktown (2-2).
